In the choice between style and functionality one is often lost for the sake of the other. Either you get a very beautiful machine that doesn’t quite tick all the boxes in terms of what it can do, or you get an extremely practical eyesore. We think Honda struck the perfect balance with this elegant 2003 SL230.

The SL230 first came out in 1997 – in Japan, that is. They kept it to themselves for a while and only begrudgingly exported it to a few select markets from 2002. It was designed as an all-round ride: something you could take up into the hills but which would also be comfortable around town. Over the first two years of production they made some changes so that by the early noughties the SL’s that rolled out of the Hamamatsu factory had a more rigid frame, better rear suspension, lighter weight and improved fuel economy.

The SL is a lightweight enduro bike with a low seat and thin body. It is incredibly easy to handle, even for relative beginners and smaller riders but has enough power with its 230cc, 20PS engine to allow “veteran” (the Japanese word for experienced) riders to enjoy. Great on- and off-road and rarely seen in these parts.

The colour on ours is the rarer (most SLs are silver) white with red and silver decals on the tank, a white front fender and two-tone seat. It comes with knuckle guards and a rear rack. The lines on this bike are just exquisite. From the teardrop tank to the upswept exhaust with midway ridge, the whole thing flows beautifully. We think the SL230 is as elegant a piece of motorcycle engineering as you will find.

This bike is in lovely condition and has been checked by our mechanics in Japan. Further photos and a video will follow highlighting any cosmetic imperfections once we unload. Mechanically, she is all in good order.

This bike is due to arrive with us on May 22nd. A £500 deposit will secure the machine. If, upon arrival, the bike is not as expected the deposit will be returned.

Registration involves getting a dating certificate from a DVLA accredited dating officer, MOT, registration with DVLA and the plate. This costs £150. Delivery can be arranged.
