“I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts. There they are all standing in a row.”
Dealing in classic bikes as I do, I meet many fellow lovers of old machines who say that modern bikes lack character and I tend to agree. Here we have something that bucks the trend towards soulless utility, however, and one that is sure to become a future classic.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the 2002 Suzuki Vanvan – The Next Generation. The original Vanvan was the hugely popular RV125 which came out in 1972. This is a very different bike, although it is oozing character and charm, just like its predecessor. Born at around the same time that Kawasaki created their lovely 250TR and Honda, the FTR – both retro styled ‘kinda-sorta’ enduros – the conversation at the Suzuki design meeting appears to have gone something like this
Suzuki director: There’s a demand for bikes with an old school look, ones that you can take off road a bit but handle well around town. Can we do something like this?
Suzuki engineer: Yes, chief. We can certainly do that. In fact, why don’t we add a little zing to it? We can pop on a massive muffler and have a 14 inch rear rim with a balloon tyre that’ll make the whole package look and feel more fun than a karaoke contest with helium.
Suzuki director: OK. Sounds good, but don’t mess around with the fundamentals. This bike needs to be light, easy to handle and to deliver power like a modern road machine.
And that’s exactly what happened. They built a reliable, 4-stroke, single cylinder, air cooled, SOHC bike that has something of an old time look with a modern (and slightly eccentric) twist. Coming in at less than 130kg and providing 16HP, there’s plenty of umph for day to day riding and anywhere it goes it gets second, third and fourth looks.
Ours is one of the originals but still in ridiculously nice condition. It has covered only 4,692 miles and the silver tank, black frame and black muffler still look good. This really is a handsome bike and given that it is already 18 years young, we’re not so many years away from collectable.
Since they are still being made, Suzuki definitely got something right and we are confident this bike will become highly sought after in the future. There’s nothing else quite like it. In the intervening years, before it matures into a classic, you have an interesting and performing smallish bike with oodles of personality.
Why buy this bike? Well, a new Vanvan is going to cost nearly £2000 more and this one already has valuable years (but not so many miles) under her belt. It’s fun, practical, eye catching and reliable.
And how many bikes make you feel like singing a song about coconuts?
