These days it’s easy to see the Honda corporation as just one of the world’s largest motoring manufacturers, but it wasn’t so long ago that it was battling to make a name for itself and compete against the big European makers. Honda did this with a combination of hard work and innovation – and innovation was what drove this bike’s design.
Everyone is familiar with the Cub, the bike that changed the world, but the Benly is just as important to the history of Honda as that iconic scooter. The first Benlys rolled off the production line in 1953, just three months after the development of the prototype. Right from the start, innovation was at the heart of the Benly series of bikes. It used telescopic front forks, a curved backbone frame and mounted the engine onto the swingarm to reduce vibration thereby improving comfort.
In comparison to the Cub, there are two fundamental differences. The first is riding position. The Cub is a step-through whereas the CD90 Benly rides like a “normal” motorcycle. The second is the gears. Cubs have semi-automatic gears whereas the Benly has regular, clutched gears.
Over the years there have been a number of Benly bikes produced and we are delighted to be able to introduce you to our lovely 2000 CD50 Benly. In many ways it is a classic business bike – single seat, back carrier, upright riding position – but the elegance of the design really make it stand out.
Ours is a year 2000 model in black and grey with a silver pinstripe. The subtle colouring add to the elegance of this lovely small bike. There are a couple of marks – a small scratch on the tank and dent on the front fender – but overall the condition is lovely. The engine in particular looks great – not surprising since it has only done 5,529 miles. The chrome rear carrier looks excellent as does the chain guard and muffler with muffler guard. The SOHC 4-stroke engine hangs under the tank like a silvery bat.
Benly is the Japanese word for convenient. The Benly series of bikes were meant to be useful as well as attractive. They are reliable, robust, economical and a pleasure to ride. As such they are often worked hard so it isn’t every day we find CD50’s in such lovely condition.
