2006 Honda MD50 33,534 km 20,825 miles
The Mail Delivery 50, or MD50, has been in service since 1973 and there is very good reason for its longevity. The Japanese say they have 5 seasons – the regular four plus the rainy season – and this bike has to keep going through all of them. It is a true workhorse with small fat rims – 14”X 2.75 – extra strong suspension, huge, heavy duty carriers front and rear, a large tank – it even has reinforced mudguards. There are also some nice little touches that may not be so obvious, such as the steering lock, helmet lock and heated handgrips.
Bear in mind that this is the country that gave us the unbreakable Supercub. When Japan Post asked for a delivery bike, Honda completely redesigned an already incredible machine to make it fit the postal service’s requirements. They increased the tank size and, head to tail, made it more robust.
The only problem with the MD50 really is that you can’t get them. Well, you can on two conditions: 1. You’re in Japan and 2. You don’t mind them being rusty, crusty and resprayed. (The Japanese government has strict laws relating to the resale of government related vehicles and although strictly speaking post bikes don’t fall under this category any more, they are still required to be ‘marked’ as decommissioned. This usually means defiling the beautiful red paint with large splashes of black.)
However, we’re in luck. Our sister company in Japan found this beauty in amongst the bedraggled hordes of retired postal bikes. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves with regards to cosmetics. As far as the mechanical side of things – well, she’s only done 20,800 miles which for an MD50 is almost new.
I may be coming over as a little casual but in all seriousness we are extraordinarily lucky to have found an MD50 in such lovely condition. This bike, as with all our bikes, has undergone a 23-point check by our colleagues in Japan prior to shipping.
Japan Post has started switching to different bikes so these will become harder to find. Get one while you can!
Please get in touch to come and view her in person and you’ll see what I mean.
