The Honda Tact has been a big seller in Japan for a number of reasons. First off, it’s small, even for a scooter. This makes it easy to manoeuvre, even in heavy traffic and even if you’re physically not very strong. Secondly it is reliable. The Tacts just go and go. Thirdly, they are practical with a large storage area, front pocket and rear rack. Fourth, people like the look. And fifth, but not least, it’s a two stroke so punches above its weight.
How do I know so much about them? Mine was stolen back in 1996 from just outside Kokura Bowl (bowling alley in the southern city of Kitakyushu.) I’m still annoyed about it.
First released in the early eighties and produced right through to 2017, the Tact had a number of facelifts while maintaining its reputation for robustness and reliability. Ours is the 1999 with the sleaker headlight and rear light clusters as well as the Honda Combi Brake System which spreads the braking optimally between front and back.
In two-tone café latte and cream with black seat, rear rack and engine, the colouring is subtle. While there are a few small marks, the overall condition is excellent. This scooter would make the perfect commuter/runaround for someone who is looking for something robust, light, fuel efficient and reliable.
