I was at the Stafford classic bike show recently and saw some amazing machines: Vincents, Brough Superiors, Triumphs, old Suzukis and Kwaks and Yams, all of them gleaming and immaculate. They were true works of art, a collaboration of the work of the original engineers and the current owners combining to produce gorgeous metal masterpieces I’d love to have in my living room. I’m not sure I’d be completely happy riding them, though. This 31-year-old Super Cub C70, on the other hand, is something I would whizz around on at the drop of a hat.
Given that there have been over 100 million Cubs produced, I suppose it’s not that surprising that there are so many variations – C50, C70, C90, CT110, Press Cub, Little Cub etc – but my eyebrows are raised every time we open a new shipment to discover the team in Japan have found yet another example of a rare subcategory of the Cub in proper nice condition.
70cc is an unusual engine size and, in comparison to the 50 and the 90, there were not many made. Contrary to popular belief, not all bikes in Japan are kept in good condition, so finding a vintage 70cc looking like this one here was quite a coup. It has done only about 6,500 miles but even that could have been enough to allow the bike to succumb to the harsh weather conditions – bear in mind nowhere in Japan can the meteorology be described as mild. This particular example, however, has been well cared for. Forks, shocks, fenders, swingarm, paint, rims, exhaust – it’s all really good. Not Stafford-classic-bike-show good but I-can’t-wait-to-hop-on-and-have-some-fun good. Plus, it has the added appeal of being the much lesser spotted C70 variety.
