The CL400 was revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1997 and went on sale in September the following year. Honda engineers were given the design brief of building a bike that handles well in the city and on country lanes and has timeless beauty. They carried that off with aplomb. Feeding the boom for retro-style scrambler-type bikes at the time but now a highly sought after classic in its own right, the CL400 is arguably the most elegant production motorcycle in its field.

The overall look is an homage to the earlier scramblers but this is really a road bike, using the NC38E engine that started with the iconic GB400TT. As well as its good looks and value as a collectable, it handles beautifully.

Ours is a 1998 model in lovely condition. Except for an almost imperceptible dent on the left side of the tank and a small area of discolouring on the exhaust (please see video) she is in exceptional condition. From the spoked wheels, the chrome fenders, through the twin-shocks, engine, twin exhaust, rear carrier and tank, this bike is beautiful. The chrome is, as we say in Japanese, pika-pika – shiny shiny!
