I very much enjoy sharing details and stories about the bikes in our collection and much of it is not available in English so I spend time on Japanese language sites which often contain interesting details. This is especially important since so many of our bikes are rare and hard to find in the UK. Reading up on this one turned out to be particularly fun, even though it meant struggling through with my poor Japanese reading skills. (To be able to ready everything in Japanese you need to learn about 2,000 characters, most of which have more than one pronunciation, plus two phonetic scripts so it takes a while to get fully proficient.)
The bike itself is interesting enough. It’s a 2-stroke scooter with a six-port cylinder and resin reed valve. The front suspension was built with excellent dampening capabilities and it was marketed towards young people who wanted something fast and fun. Weighing in at less than 60KG thanks to lightweight parts and a compact design, it was – still is – a nippy little chappy.
The bit that caught my eye while doing the research, however, was a section on the Japanese language Wikipedia page. Roughly translated it goes something like this. “Despite there being a chaotic mess of theories about the bike name, Honda said that it was based in part on Disc Jockey – something popular with young people. In addition the letter could stand for Dash, meaning fast, and Jump. Also Dynamic, meaning liveliness, Jetline – high speed feeling – and Jolly.” So that clears that up then.
Whatever the letters stand for, the DJ stands out as a cool looking bike. It’s not blingy but it is bold with a striking tricolour design. It doesn’t just look quick, being a lightweight 2-stroke it definitely delivers. In terms of condition, overall it is really nice. There is just a little damage on the front left of the faring but other than that is looks and rides brilliant. If you’re young or young at heart and want something cool, compact and swift, come down and take a look.
