2017 was the 50th anniversary of the iconic Honda Monkey. Eleven years after the first Monkey rolled off the production line, along came its big brother – the Gorilla. Fundamentally the Gorilla was a Monkey but it came with a larger tank and seat giving it a slightly bolder look and a potential running distance of 630km. From 1981 it also had a manual four-speed transmission, something that was not fitted to the Monkeys until 1986.
Production of the Gorilla ceased in 1992 but their enduring popularity led to used models fetching premium price tags and in 1998 production was resumed. 1999 saw the release of the Honda Gorilla Spring Collection, a limited run of only 3,500 units with chrome everywhere that could be chromed – tank, side cover, front forks, chain case, exhaust guard. This was a machine which was meant to gleam and it is the one we have here.
2017 was also the final year of the Monkey. Honda announced they won’t be making anymore due to the financial cost of making an engine that meets increasingly restrictive emissions regulations. Since then we have seen a resurgence in their popularity and, although we still see plenty of them and the Gorillas on the roads in Japan, they are getting harder to source and more expensive. This goes double for limited editions like this stunning chrome Gorilla.
Ours is in excellent condition. There is some slight surface rust on the wheels, a couple of marks on the engine cover and a scratch on the headlight rim but other than that it is pretty much immaculate. Mechanically it runs like a dream and the chrome looks pretty much as it did the day it left the factory. Please see the photos and video. We would be happy to show you this bike in person.
We come across a handful of chrome Monkeys and Gorillas in Japan every year and most of them have lost some of their lustre – the sunlight and humidity can be harsh. This one is very, very special.
This is an extremely rare member of the Monkey family. Don’t miss your chance to get your hands on a literally brilliant piece of motorcycle history.
