We do tend to get a bit excited about our bikes here at Seven Seas but in this instance I think it’s fully justified. This is a first year MTX125R in the rare blue and it’s in exceptional condition. By the late seventies Honda was pretty well established as a manufacturer of solid four-strokes and their CR series was making waves but it was the MTX series that cemented Honda as number one in the minds of many Europeans and Americans. Apart from the relative value for money of the MB and MT series, it was also easy and inexpensive to improve performance with after market parts, thus making them wildly popular among young riders.
The MTX, the largest of the learner legal rides, was a game changer for many in terms of what you could get and what you could legally ride at the age of 16.
The MTX125R was released in 1983 so this is the first year model. It has a liquid-cooled, two-stroke engine that delivers 18hp. One of the innovations on this bike was the Honda ATAC (automatic adjustment torque amplification chamber) system which enabled smooth running across all speeds and a tenacious flat torque characteristic at low speed.
It is a slim, lightweight bike, with a dry weight of only 99Kg and providing a power to weight ratio of 5.5kg per horsepower. It has air adjustable hydraulic forks, Pro-Link swingarm, Showa rear shock and a Keihin carb. The square cross section rear fork is hollow and made from lightweight, very rigid, high tensile steel.
Back in the early eighties this was a highly impressive machine and even today it exceeds expectations. This is a 36-year-old off-road bike in very nice condition. There is a little ageing lower down on the front forks but overall she is extremely clean. The riding position is very comfortable, enhanced by the big seat and wide bars, and she looks amazing.
Sometimes, after a few years have rolled under the bridge, people go back and buy their first ever ride. Oftentimes, while the nostalgia trip is nice, the bike turns out to be a bit of a disappointment – not nearly as peppy as it was when we were 16! We’re sure this one won’t disappoint, however. A stunning, classic two-stroke dirtbike which will put a smile on anyone’s face.
This bike has been through the NOVA system. We can arrange registration and delivery. Registration is a 3-step process: obtain a dating certificate from a DVLA accredited dating officer; MOT; registration with DVLA. This costs £150.
