Imagine you’re Mr Honda and one day your engineers come and tell you they can’t make the best, most fun, cutest, most magnificent bike in the lineup anymore. First of all you’d want to know why. The reasons – as usual – relate to ever tightening emissions restrictions. In this case it makes the production of the engine totally commercially non-viable.
Once you pick yourself up off the floor the next thing is to decide what to do next. Do you sigh, consign the model to history and sit around telling tales? Well, that would probably be sensible and certainly the easiest option. But Mr Honda doesn’t do easy. He sent the engineers back to their dungeon and demanded they create something that carried on the spirit of the Monkey without falling foul of the emissions police.
Many scrunched up pieces of paper later, they unveil the New Monkey. No longer a 50cc but a striking 125cc. No longer the dinky little beast you could hide under the bed – the Monkey has all grown up. Kinda.
It’s still small. By most standards it is a very compact bike. It’s just bigger than it was. What is absolutely genius about it is that, despite using the brilliant Grom engine as a base, in profile it actually looks almost exactly like the later model Z50J. The lines, the tank, the seat, the bars – it’s as close as you’re going to get to seeing a machine grow from being a child to an adult.
Honda kept the soul of the Monkey, increased its bulk and added a whole load of modern engineering to make it more comfortable and practical. It rides really well is be attested to by countless reviews online. Being a Monkey, many people haven’t been able to restrain themselves from monkeying with it and you will now see plenty of examples with aftermarket parts and customised pieces.
