Dachshunds are lively little dogs with long bodies and short legs. The Japanese word for Dachshund is pronounced Daks-hunt. That’s why this bike, with its long body and small wheels, was originally named the Daks-Honda, later shortened to simply Dax.

First released in 1969, the Dax was produced as an easy-to-use leisure bike. The air-cooled, four stroke SOHC engine is supported in the pressed steel T-bone frame. Originally the three gears used an automatic clutch, making this about as straightforward to ride as a broomstick. Ours is the 1976 model with manual 4-speed transmission, which provides a little bit more control to the rider.

Daxes are often compared to Monkeys but there are a couple of fundamental differences. Right from the get go, it was envisioned that the Dax should be able to handle terrain that would frighten a Monkey – tough little dogs, dachshunds. There is an over-muffler and the longer wheel base gives much greater stability on climbs than the Monkey. You might not win any trials competitions but you could get up to some mischief on farmer Giles’ fields.

Monkeys have been steadily increasing in price as the years have gone by, and Daxes are also beginning to catch the eyes of aficionados to a greater and greater extent. Our 1976 green Dax 70 is a beautiful example of a well cared for classic. There is some light rust on the wheels and other age related marks but overall she looks really good. The frame, chrome muffler protector, handlebars and paintwork are all nice and the engine runs very well.

Now over forty years old, this is a remarkable little beauty and one that should prove a good investment. Priced to sell, don’t miss this opportunity.
