Han Solo from Star Wars, Napoleon Solo from The Man From U.N.C.L.E, Aled Jones from “While walking in the air.” There have been a number of memorable solos in the past and right up there with the best of them is this 2003 Honda Solo 50 in Monza red.
Developed by the N Project team in Honda in the early noughties, the Solo took the unbreakable Cub engine and put it in a bike with a totally unique look. (The N Project team, standing for New Projects, were a group tasked with delivering new styles of bikes. They were the same people who brought us the Bite, the Zoomer and the PS250 Ruckus.)
The Solo has a look that is somewhat of a chimera – a combination of different beasts. With the bicycle style seat and long mudguards it has a feel of an early twentieth century motorcycle but with the monoshock suspension and backbone frame like the Monkey it also looks sleek and modern. The stretched teardrop tank and backswept bars topped off with the single round dial complete the striking look. To keep the low-slung profile, despite the 18-inch rims, the swingarm is longer than one would expect, a feature highlighted by the short muffler which barely reaches the rear wheel.
It is powered by the C50 engine so you have a clutchless three-speed transmission, great fuel economy and world class reliability.
The Solo came in a range of colour options, the rarest of which is this Monza red. There are very few of these bikes around and we feel this is one which, as well as being a fun and eye-catching ride, is one that will prove to be a sound investment.
