The Yamaha Mate can trace its origins all the way back to the late 50’s and early 60’s when, taking advantage of surging demand for mopeds, the big three of Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha all developed competing models. Whereas Honda developed the legendary C100 (Cub) using a 4-stroke engine, Yamaha and Suzuki developed 2-strokes.
All three found success but which one was truly better? It’s a debate that will rage on forever. While the Cub was the greater commercial success and environmental concerns combined with government regulations have signed the 2-strokes’ death sentence, performance-wise and mechanically speaking the jury remains decidedly out.
The Cub is renowned for being robust but aficionados of the Mate swear by them and believe it to be a stronger engine. It is certainly easier to repair and, as 2-strokes will, it has a lot more oomph than a Cub.
Our 1991 Yamaha Mate 80 Deluxe here is truly exceptional. Not only is it probably the only one in Great Britain, it is the ultimate iteration of this venerable bike as they ceased production in 1996. Earlier point ignition, 6 volt Mates were sold new in the UK from the early 70’s to the mid 80’s, we unfortunately never received the newer versions. The final Mate 80 edition as pictured here sported all chrome rear suspension, metallic dark green and an enlarged side cover with an aesthetically pleasing light blue, grey and dark grey sticker scheme. The combination of the metallic green paint and these colours make this an elegant moped, almost belying its feistiness. Oh yes, this Mate 80 is faster than a C90 – at least in a start dash
Our Mate 80 has only done 19202 miles and was used by the Yamada Company in Japan. We have left the Japanese characters on the front fender so we don’t forget where she comes from. Where she goes from here, that is up to you!
