This sleek looking little chap is something of a legend. Made only in 1989 and 1990, the Honda G’ (pronounced Gee Dash) is a 50cc 2 stroke sports scooter. It was targeted at young riders at the peak of the bubble economy when Japanese people would pay for top quality products in the most niche of markets.
The entire scooter is designed with speed and handling in mind. It has a 160mm front disc brake, a large stainless muffler, front suspension with dampening in aluminium casing and an inner designed to optimise airflow. The 2-stroke engine puts out 6.8HP at 7,000 revs, which may not sound like a lot but when you only weigh 59Kg this gives plenty of zip. The legendary Italian Moto GP rider Loris Capirossi loved the G’ and tuned his up to go over 100kph.
Given that these scooters were designed for young riders who bought it for its speed, it may not be a huge surprise to learn that many of them have been written off. There was only a limited production run so this very clean example is now, 30 years on, a rare find indeed.
Historically interesting, brilliantly engineered and a huge amount of fun, this G’, now UK registered, will be a valuable addition to any scooter aficionado’s collection and/or a superb ride for humming along the seafront, overtaking Vespas.
