Evolution. The stunning café racer style GB250 is a descendent of an enduro, the XR350R. Honda engineers took the engine from the 350, trimmed it down to 250, popped a double overhead cam on it and created the CBX250. This was back in the early eighties and the styling of the CBX was very much of its time – angular and aggressive.
Someone at Honda felt the need for a more classically styled bike and the café racer GB (for Great Britain, as a nod to its design influence) was born.
The GB is a surprisingly speedy thing. The air-cooled engine provides about 30HP and the gearing allows for snappy acceleration. At a cruise, it is comfortable and stylish. Pull up at a café (don’t worry, we’ll be able to go to cafes again soon) and everyone will admire the smooth looks enhanced by the twin rear shocks and knee pads on the tank.
Ours is a 1990 model in silver with an after-market pipe that makes a throaty but not too aggressive sound. (Think Louis Armstrong rather than Brian Johnson.) It has a beautiful seat, café racer decal at the rear and a kneeling silhouetted serviceman against a poppy background at the base of the tank near the seat. There is some ageing on the engine but overall the condition is lovely. She starts on the button, sounds great and pulls really well.
These bikes don’t often come up for sale which is an indication of how well they are loved by their owners. If you appreciate the lovely lines on this machine, why not treat yourself?
