There are roughly 127 million people in Japan and that generates a lot of post, which in turn means a lot of post office bikes. Many of you will have heard of the Honda MD50 (MD standing for Mail Delivery) and the MD90 but here is the lesser-known middle sibling, the MD70.
Based around the Cub engine (although not identical) all the Honda post bikes have the durability of regular Cubs with structural enhancements to increase strength - smaller, fatter wheels, different suspension, reinforced stands and over-size racks, front and back.
The MD50 is mostly used in flatter urban areas where there is not a great need for speed or power – just reliability in all the extreme weather Japan seems to attract. The 90cc big brother is more likely to be found pounding the asphalt in mountainous rural areas, hooning up and down steep single track lanes to isolated farms and villages. The MD70 is something of a crossover and as such is much rarer. It’s got more grunt than the 50 but is lighter and slimmer than the 90.
Despite tens of thousands of these postal bikes being on the ground at any one time in Japan, by the time they reach retirement age, the vast majority of them look and sound like they’ve just completed the Paris Dakar with no support team while carrying sacks full of angry meerkats. While this MD70 is not immaculate, it is in good condition throughout, especially for one that is 37 years old.
Any Japanese postal bike in good condition is a prize but the MD70 is the white lion of the family in terms of rarity. This early 6V one has done a few miles but has avoided the damage most of its siblings suffer. It runs really well and looks fantastic depsite its 37 years.
This bike has been put through the NOVA system. The bike has been fully UK registered, this includes the Dating Certificate, MOT, Registration, UK log book and age related number plate.
